Purposeful Thought in the Classroom: Do Emotions Matter?

Douglas P. Newton

School of Education, Durham University, England

This workshop is an opportunity to explore in more detail some specific aspects of the interactions of moods and emotions with purposeful thought. It will be divided into parts (the duration being dependent on interest). Each part will begin with a very short presentation and will follow with an opportunity for the group to contribute and discuss ideas. The parts are likely to be about:

  1. Moods, emotions and teachers’ thinking and practice;
  2. Moods, emotions and mature students’ thinking;
  3. Moods, emotions and research on teaching strategies; and
  4. Moods, emotions and critical thinking.
