Michel Henri Kowalewicz

Michel ICIE Conference
Michel Henri Kowalewicz, historian of ideas, professor at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, founder and head of the “History of Ideas Research Centre” at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, head of the European History of Ideas Research Network, associated in the past with the Centre d’Etude du XVIIIe siècle de Montpellier (C.N.R.S.). His general research topic is a study in the eighteenth century European thought and culture. A central point of this work is to account for the approaches of the Middle Ages, and especially the role-played by national consciousness in triggering such approaches. On the discovery of Middle Ages by Lessing he presented 1995 his thesis ‘Lessing et la pensée médiévale’, and several papers proposed at the conferences in France, Germany, Italy, Greece, and other European countries. During his collaboration with the Centre d’études médiévales of the University of Amiens, he worked on several case studies to illustrate these points: the discovery of the Middle Ages in France and in Germany, and the development of the image of this period. Since 1996 associated with the Centre of Montpellier he presented a research programme on the contacts and oppositions between Lumières and Aufklärung in the eighteenth century Europe, especially in Russia. His research concerned the role of different mediators between the German language lands and Russia, as well as a role of different scientific networks in the eighteenth century academic world. He presented his habilitation à diriger des recherches on the dissemination of ideas and texts in the 18th Century (‘De Doctrinae et Culturae Translatione) in 2004 at the University of Amiens. Since 2005 he teaches philosophy and history of ideas in Poland: at the University of Gdansk and at the Warsaw School of Social Psychology and finally at Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He is a co-editor for the book-series on history of ideas by German publisher mentis Verlag in Münster and an internet journal in Italy.
