Media Arts in the Digital Age: Edutainment in the Classroom

Research has established positive correlations between learners’ arts engagement and academic, personal, behavioral, and socio-professional achievement. This presentation will show the extent to which the interdisciplinary field of edutainment whereby the entertaining film medium and learners’ school subjects could come together in highly passionate learning experiences.



Education Through Arts in ICIE Conference

Thus, samples of short educational films related to learning within the social sciences from K-12 schools and universities will be shared. Other samples targeting special needs learners will also be highlighted. In addition, productions related to learning through shadow puppets, mime, and storyboarding along the line of Theodosakis (1999), Bahloul & Graham (2012), Backenroth & Sinclair (2015), among others will also be shown to be highly effective learning strategies. In short, the symposium will show learning through film and game samples in a variety of content courses and will demonstrate the impact of edutainment tools on regular and special needs learners.



Maher Bahlol in ICIE Conference

Maher Bahloul is the Director and General Manager of an Education Through Arts Institute - Maher Language Institute (MLI) - which he founded in 2007 in Paris, France. MLI has been holding language sessions and promoting learning through filmmaking. Dr. Bahloul holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Cornell University, New York, USA, and a Masters' degree from the Sorbonne University, Paris III, France. He has taught in a number of graduate and undergraduate programs in the United States, North Africa, and the Middle East. He has also presented papers and conducted workshops in international conferences such as TESOL, ALS, INTED, IVACS, IATEFL, ETEN, ICIE, INsea, etc. At MLI, he focuses on promoting language learning through bilingual video-project productions, especially films. Dr. Bahloul is currently an Associate Professor of English and Linguistics at the American University of Sharjah.


Raja Mallek in ICIE Conference


Raja Mallek earned her Master’s degree in Linguistics from Cornell University. She has been teaching English for more than 20 years. She taught in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. She is passionate about teaching and enjoys working with her students.

Her areas of research include vocabulary learning, innovative teaching strategies, edutainment, and online resources.




Amal Bahloul in ICIE Conference

Amal Bahloul is the CEO of Lights Camera Learn, a California based company which promotes learning through acting and filmmaking. A Graduate of Pepperdine University, Malibu, California.
